WordCamp cancellations are spreading

As the CoVid-19 pandemic continues to grow, more and more WordCamps worldwide are now canceled.

The effects of the CoVid-19 pandemic are now spreading into the WordPress ecosystem.

As a consequence WordCamp cancellations are spreading too.

In an article on wordpress.org on Wednesday, March 4 2020 WordPress Executive Director Josepha Haden said that because of the severity of the CoVid-19 pandemic WordCamp travel should be reduced to a minimum.

We should do our part, as members of a highly connected global community, to limit the spread of the virus while there are still so many unknowns.

Over the next few months, we encourage you to keep WordCamp travel to a minimum.

As early as February 2020, WordCamp Asia was canceled due to the severe spread of CoVid-19 in Asia at the time.

We wrote about this in an article on February 12, 2020.

WordCamp cancellations are spreading

The CoVid-19 pandemic is now causing massive cancellations of WordCamps in several parts of the world.

The listing below is comprised of a selection of canceled WordCamps:

WordCamp 2020 March 21, 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland has been canceled.

WordCamp Retreat 2020 on April 30 to May 3, 2020 in Soltau, Germany has also been canceled.

Last week on March 4, 2020 organizers canceled WordCamp DC on March 27-29, 2020 in Washington DC, USA.

Rising number of cancellations for registered attendees

More and more attendees are cancelling their registration for a WordCamp event.

The people behind some of the major contributors to WordPress are now canceling their participation.

These include the people behind WordPress security software WordFence and WordPress hosting company GoDaddy, who together with several other WordPress companies have chosen to cancel their employees registrations.

WordCamps

WordCamps are organized locally in many countries around the world.

WordCamp is the WordPress community’s annual celebration – a get-together where workshops, lectures and social events are organized for anyone interested.

Larger WordCamp venues are organized at a regional level:

WordCamp Europe is one such regional venue scheduled to launch in Porto, in Portugal on June 4-6, 2020.

Virtual WordCamps?

Although cancellations of WordCamps are spreading at an increasing rate, efforts to make at least some of the events available, for example through live streams some of the ‘big’ events at WordCamp are being made.

Following the cancellation of WordCamp Asia 2020, a pop-up livestream featuring Matt Mullenweg and others was quickly arranged.

Andrea Middleton, who is WordPress Community Leadership, asked in a tweet for ideas to develop a livestream infrastructure that could secure WordCamp it’s – if nothing else – virtual survival in the Coronavirus era.
